Chyawanprash is considered an essential Ayurvedic tonic that has a mythical history mentioned in ancient medical cannons of Ayurveda such as the Dhanvantari Charaka and Hridaya Samhitas. These sacred texts state that some 12 thousand years ago a man named Chyawan sought the fountain of youth from sages known as the Ashvini Kumars who practiced Ayurveda in the higher realms. They gave Chyawan a long list of herbs and minerals which he collected from the Himalayas and consumed every day for 108 years. It is said he then lived for 1000 years without any signs of ageing and it is this same combination of herbs minerals and fruits that are now known as Chyawanprash which literally means ‘the food of the wise man’.

Chyawanprash is a jam-like elixir that improves the body’s entire physiological well-being. It acts on the gastrointestinal tract purifying the blood thus increasing haemoglobin. It also improves the metabolic and enzymatic function of the liver and pancreas. Chyawanprash reduces cholesterol normalising blood-pressure and balances lipid count to build overall vitality. It boosts the body’s regenerative processes healing chronic disease such as multiple sclerosis and even reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. Chyawanprash boosts mood and improves cognitive function such as memory and learning capacity and corrects sexual dysfunction such as impotence and decreased libido.

The Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita (6.39. 33-41) states: “Taking Chyawanprash the wise man Chyawan was cured from respiratory ailments dyspnoea fever infertility heart disease arthritis diseases of the genitourinary system and various cognitive dysfunction such as speech disorders. Chyawanprash helps children grow bestows strength and vitality to the elderly and cures the ill. It sharpens the mind improves memory and increases longevity by stoking the fire of digestion and the senses to give great strength to the body”.

Active ingredients:

Amla (Emblica officinalis). One of the richest sources of Vitamin C found in any fruit. Amla is said to contain 5 (sharp sour bitter sweet and astringent) of the 6 tastes considered in Ayurveda mandatory for healthy digestion lacking only a salty flavour. Amla acts on digestive disorders regulating stomach acidity. It is used for the treatment of ulcers gastritis colitis colic and flatulence. Amla aids digestion eliminating chemicals found in processed food and improves uptake of vitamins and trace minerals from food. It is mildly laxative.

Sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum). Contains trace minerals and is rich in carbohydrates to aid cell metabolism. Sugar is required for healthy cognitive function and for storing energy according to the Ayurveda. It aids digestion and is rich in fibre.

Patala (Stereospermum suaveolens). A famous tonic with rejuvenating properties. It heals numerous ailments such as tissue swelling fluid retention and other inflammatory diseases. Patala treats cough and other respiratory ailments. It heals indigestion and other stomach ailments eliminating pathogens.

Aegle marmelos (Aegle marmelos). Purifies the blood from deep-seated toxins aiding nutrient absorption. It tones the nervous system and aids digestion. Wood apple helps to heal dry cough diarrhoea dysentery and even diabetes. It is astringent with helminthic and antipyretic properties.

Chinaka (Oroxylum indicum). A well known liver tonic that boosts overall vitality. Used in Chyawanprash and other Ayurvedic remedies Indian trumpet flower is a powerful antioxidant eliminating free radicals that consume the body’s vitamins and minerals. The seeds and roots of this plant have analgesic anti-inflammatory diaphoretic and regenerative effects to treat respiratory ailments boost immunity and strengthen the gastrointestinal tract. Indian trumpet flower prevents fungal infections heals ulcers and restores damaged tissues.

Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris). Used in the Ayurvedic preparation Dashamool ‘ten flowers’. It treats genitourinary disorders due to having high silicic acid content that cleanses the kidney and liver. It treats joint inflammation by removing excess fluid and its anti-inflammatory action cleanses the urinary tract. Gokshura increases semen vitality and heals prostrate ailments. It restores the Ayurvedic dosha vatta.

Brihati (Solanum indicum). A powerful antioxidant that balances the body’s respiratory and digestive systems. It is used to treat abdominal disorders and has antiseptic anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. Brihati has been used in the Ayruvedic tonic Rasayana ‘fruit tonic’ for thousands of years to boost overall vitality.

Prishniparna (Uraria picta). Strengthens blood vessels and prevents excessive bleeding. It has antioxidant anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. Prishniparna reduces mucus and sputum discharge.

Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum). Stimulates hormonal secretions and the production of corticosteroids to treat impotency infertility menstruation disorders obesity respiratory ailments such as asthma and cardiovascular ailments. Kantakari contains powerful alkaloids to treat cough and rhinitis. It is mildly diuretic.

Agnimantha (Premna integrifolia). Stimulates blood circulation relieving inflammation and increases metabolic function of deep tissues and muscle. It accelerates the healing of bruising and tumours.

Pippali (Piper longum). Highly beneficial to stimulate the pulmonary system and gastrointestinal tract. Reduces sputum and mucous and is effective in treating asthma bronchitis and even tuberculosis. Pippali is a strong antioxidant.

Pistachio (Pistacia). Highly beneficial to the human body reducing cholesterol to prevent cardiovascular disease. They strengthen cellular membranes and blood vessels to improve circulation and have been scientifically shown to favourably alter the biochemical composition of the blood. Pistachios are rich in vitamins and balance the reproductive systems of both men and women increasing general vitality.

Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia). Highly beneficial medicinal plant that treats numerous diseases. It stimulates and boosts the immune system and is a powerful antioxidant to treat lethargy whilst slowing the ageing process. Guduchi cleanses the body of harmful toxins improves digestion cognition and memory and alleviates stress and depression by calming the nervous system.

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). An excellent herb that slows the effects of ageing increasing longevity. It prevent hair greyness improves sight and memory and heals respiratory and digestive ailments. It boosts immunity and restores intestinal flora. It has a mild laxative effect.

Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum). Has seeds rich in essential oils and trace minerals such as zinc calcium magnesium sodium and phosphorous and is an abundant source of vitamins A and B. Cinnamon calms the nervous system treating disorders such as depression and lethargy whilst giving an overwhelming sense of calm and serenity. It is useful in gastrointestinal disorders and prevents respiratory ailments such as asthma bronchitis pharyngitis and chronic cough by eliminating mucous and sputum from the bronchial tract. Cinnamon aids digestion and prevents diarrhoea and flatulence.

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum). Cloves have many healing properties, thanks to eugenol (85%) in its composition – an essential oil that has antiseptic and antispasmodic effects, as well as diuretic and decontaminating.

Dosage: Ayurveda recommends Chyawanprash be consumed 15-20 minutes before meals mixed with water or milk (or plant-based alternative) or herbal tea.

Adults: take 1/2 to 2 teaspoons twice daily as a vitamin and mineral supplement to treat lethargy and boost overall vitality if recovering from excessive stress or surgery.

Children over 4 years of age: take 1/4 to 1 teaspoon daily with milk or plant-based alternative.

The elderly: take 1/3 teaspoon 2-3 times daily with milk or plant-based alternative.

For those suffering from nervous or cardiovascular system disorders take 1/3 teaspoon in the morning for 10 days increasing the dosage gradually by 1/3 every 10 days. After that the dosage can be increased to that recommended for adults. In such cases Chyawanprash should be taken 30-40 minutes after eating.

For chronic diseases and acute infections, take 1 tsp. 3 times daily.

For those suffering chronic illness and acute infections take 1 teaspoon 3 times per day. In cases of chronic gastritis stomach ulcers acid reflux and high acidity Chyawanprash should be taken 30-40 minutes after eating.

Recommendations: It is suggested a 3 month course of Chyawanprash be taken. The elderly should consume Chyawanprash at least for the duration of 2 courses yearly.

Contraindications: chronic kidney disease and gastrointestinal disorders such as poor digestion. Check individual tolerance to the entire list of ingredients of Chyawanprash.

Storage: Chyawanprash should be stored in a dry cool environment.
