Mentat is the generic trade name for an Ayurvedic herbal remedy useful in cognitive health to stimulate mental processes and improve memory. Mentat has been shown to be effective in rehabilitation from alcohol/substance dependence hyperkinesis behavioural issues such as pronounced aggression and susceptibility to stress. It is helpful in instances of epilepsy and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease too.
Active ingredients:
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri). Widely used in Ayruveda to balance the three doshas (humours). Used in cognitive disorders to align the hemispheres of the brain Brahmi acts on the nervous system improving cognition whilst benefitting the entire body by boosting immunity.
Indian valeriana (Valeriana wallichii). Indian species of valerian has abundantly more essential fragrant oil than the European species. Valeric acid soothes and calms the body treating nervous disorders such as anxiety dizziness fainting insomnia and even alleviates menstrual pain. It is useful to boost the microflora of the gastrointestinal tract to aid digestion.
Gotu kola (Centella asiatica). A cerebral tonic improving blood and oxygen supply to the brain. It increases mental capacity improves memory and aids in the entire cognitive process. Gotu kola relieves headaches by removing toxins in the nervous system cleansing the vessels of the brain. It is mildly diuretic.
Shankha pushpi (Evolvulus alsinoides). Improves cognitive function acting on the nervous system boosting memory and relieving stress. It increases the brain’s speed of response in motoneuron function and may also assist in speech disorders.
Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi). Calms the nervous system without drowsiness. It improves genitourinary cardiovascular and respiratory function. It treats skin disorders decreased libido and accelerates bone healing. It also has a cognitive effect improving memory.
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). Excellent medicinal herb that slows the effects of ageing thus increasing longevity. It prevent hair greyness improves sight and memory and heals respiratory and digestive ailments. Haritaki boosts immunity and restores intestinal flora. It has a mild laxative effect.
Almonds (Prunus dulcis). Rich in Vitamin E that increases tissue elasticity to restore the skin and scalp when applied topically. Almonds are high in protein acting beneficially on the internal organs. Almonds are a natural moisturiser with a sweet aroma.
Amla (Emblica officinalis). 100 g of Amla has 30 times more vitamin C than an orange. Amla strengthens bones teeth revitalises hair improving metabolism and digestion by cleansing toxins from the liver whilst removing heavy metals and free radicals. It aids heart health by stabilising blood sugar levels.
Arjuna (Arjuna myrobalan). An integral ingredient of the tonic rasayana used in Ayurvedic medicine to purify the blood by reducing cholesterol and triglycerides to optimise blood pressure whilst strengthening cell structure in the heart. It enriches the lungs with oxygen to heal headaches caused by cerebral blood disorders. It is used for treating diarrhoea liver disorders and even accelerates the healing of broken bones.
Dosage: for alcohol dependence 2 tablets 3 times daily 1 hour before meals and 2 hours after meals taken with lukewarm water and continue dosage for 6 months. To improve cognitive function 1 tablet twice per day and continue dosage for 6 months. For more serious neurological and other disorders such as hypertension diabetes Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease (aged 35 to 65 years) take 2 tablets thrice per day an hour before meals and repeat 2 hours after meals taken with lukewarm water. Continue dosage for 6 months.
Mentat should only be used under supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
